Martin Fink is marine-officier bij de Koninklijke Marine en momenteel geplaats als universitair docent humanitair oorlogsrecht en internationaal publiekrecht binnen de sectie Militair Recht van de Faculteit Militaire Wetenschappen (FMW) aan de Nederlandse Defensie Academie (NLDA).
Hij doet promotieonderzoek naar het recht toepasselijk tijdens maritieme interceptie operaties (MIO), dat plaatsvindt binnen het onderzoeksprogramma The Role of Law in Armed Conflict and Peace Operations van het Amsterdam Center for International Law (ACIL) van de Universiteit van Amsterdam (UvA).
Voor deze plaatsing was hij onder meer Legal Advisor van de Netherlands Maritime Force (NLMARFOR) en het NAVO-operationeel hoofdkwartier Allied Joint Force Command in Napels, Italië. Hij heeft deelgenomen aan verschillende operaties, waaronder Irak, Afghanistan en Libië. Hij is in 2001 afgestudeerd aan de Universiteit van Leiden.
