In my PhD research I am pursueing my interest in child language development by looking at the acquisition of morphophonology (the sound changes that take place in morphemes, the smallest meaningful units in a language). This is especially interesting as two domains of linguistics, morphology and phonology, have to be combined. Although variability in the acquisition of  allomorphs (variant forms of a morpheme) has been found, this has only been found in production and no research has looked at the perception/judgement of morphophonological processes. 

In particular, I study the acquisition of the Dutch past tense (allomorphs /də/ and /tə/) and diminutive (allomorphs /jə/, /tjə/, /pjə/, /ətjə/ and /kjə/) in 5-8 year old typically developing children and poor readers. I am trying to find the main factors that have an influence on the acquisition of morphophonology.  I will mostly focus on the effect input frequency, phonological skills and reading skills have on children their ability to use the correct allomorph, which is why I am also including poor reading children. 

The first part of my project, in which I have tested adult their morphophonological skills, has shown that even adults do not always use the correct diminutive allomorph when pseudo words are asked to be inflected or judged as correct or incorrect. Especially the allomorph /etje/ is causing trouble. 

In addition to my research, I have organised the LOT winterschool at the UvA and the Anéla juniorendag 2015 in Nijmegen. Since January 2015 I am the treasurer of the Werkverband Amsterdamse Psycholinguisten.

In mijn promotieonderzoek aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam probeer ik uit te zoeken welke factoren invloed hebben op de ontwikkeling van de verleden tijd en verkleinwoordjes in kinderen (horen kinderen het verschil tussen bakte en *bakde en schoentje en *schoenetje. Kunnen ze onzinwoorden zoals loen en panen verbuigen? Heeft leesvaardigheid hier een invloed op?). Hiervoor test ik kinderen in groep 2,3 en 4. Het gaat om spelletjes/taakjes zoals woorden lezen, klankherkenning, zinnen beoordelen op correctheid en zinnen aanvullen met het goede woord. Naast de specifieke testen die over de verleden tijd en verkleinwoorden gaan, worden er een aantal gestandaardiseerde taken afgenomen die leesvaardigheid, woordenschat, klankherkenning en intelligentie testen.
