PhD Project

Project title: Public Images of Leaders of Right-Wing Populist Parties: the Role of the Mass Media.
In recent decades right-wing populist parties have become increasingly popular in Western European democracies. In this project I focused on two factors in explaining the electoral success of these parties: political leadership and the mass media. The project employed various quantitative studies to explore the role of the mass media in the image formation of right-wing populist party leaders. The analysis of survey panel data collected before and after the Dutch 2006 elections showed the influence of the public image of right-wing populist party leaders on the electoral preference formation for these parties. Second, a comprehensive content analysis of the electoral campaign of 2006 provided more insight in the appearance of these leaders in the mass media. In a third study the panel study and the content analysis were combined to test media effects in the campaigns for the 2007 Dutch national elections. In a final phase, we examined these media effects more thoroughly with an on-line survey experiment by using a representative sample of 4000 respondents.
