Short biography
After a scientific career of ten years that culminated with a position as department head of the scientific research institute FOM-AMOLF and a professorship at the VU University Amsterdam, I worked for management consultants McKinsey & Company (where I was involved in restructuring former government organisations and developing plans for European pension funds, among other things). I was able to further hone my skills in analytical research and management from 2002 to 2005 as director of FOM-AMOLF (200 employees), and from 2005 to 2008 when, as director, I established an auditor's office with statutory responsibility for the provinces of Flevoland, Noord-Holland, Utrecht and Zuid-Holland. From February 2008 to April 2009 I was director of the Imaging Department of ASML . I have been dean of the Faculty of Science of the UvA effective from 2009 until 2012 .
Starting November 2012 I joined ASML as VP research, at the same time I was appointed Faculty professor at the UvA Science Faculty.

Mastering your PhD
Together with Patricia Gosling I co-authored the book Mastering your PhD , published by Springer-Verlag in 2006 (2nd edition 2010). The books helps guide PhD students through their graduate student days. We regularly write for the column Science to help PhD students achieve their doctorates. In a recent Column for Nature we discussed how to start a post-PhD career in an economic downturn.
Japanese edition
In 2010 a Japanese translation of the book is published.
