Bayes factors in empirical research

Psychological Research Methodology

PhD defence ceremony

Alexander Ly advocates the use of Bayes factors in empirical research to replace or complement standard null hypothesis tests based on p-values. These Bayes factors are specifically designed to quantify the evidence for or against the existence of an effect. They allow its users to acknowledge uncertainty, so that evidence can be updated continually in light of new data. To make these Bayes factors accessible to empirical scientists, Ly has implemented them in JASP, a freely available open-source statistics program.
