X-linked adrenoleukodystrophy (ALD) is a peroxisomal metabolic disorder with a birth incidence of one in 14,700. All patients have a mutation n the gene ABCD1 that encodes a perixisomal transmembrane protein that transports very long-chain fatty acids into the peroxisome. As a result, these acids accumulate in plasma and the cells o all tissues. The aim of Malu-Clair van de Beek's research is to improve the diagnosis of ALD.
