The natriuretic peptide BNP and the inactive N-terminal fragment of its precursor, NT-proBNP, are used for both diagnostic and prognostic purposes in patients with heart failure or those suspected of heart failure. Susan Stienen carries out research into NT-proBNP-guided therapy in acute decompensated heart failure patients.
