J.F.W.M. Bartelsman (b. 1946) has been appointed professor of gastroenterology and hepatology at the Faculty of Medicine of the Universiteit van Amsterdam (UvA).

Joep Bartelsman obtained his MD degree from the Universiteit van Amsterdam and did a fellowship in Gastroenterology under professor G. Tytgat at the Wilhelmina Gasthuis between 1974 and 1979. He has been a staff member of the department of gastroenterology (MDL) of the Academic Medical Centre(AMC-UvA) since 1979, and has been head of this department since 1 April 2005.

Bartelsman co-authored numerous publications, in particular in the field of diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy and gastro-intestinal infections. He organised national education for fellows in MDL and for endoscopy nurses. Furthermore he played an active part as member of the academic (advisory ) board and council member of the Maag Lever Darm Stichting (Stomach, Liver, Intestine Foundation). He was appointed an honorary member of the Nederlandse Vereniging voor Gastroenterologie (Dutch Society for Gastroenterology) in 2005, of which he had been a board member and chair of the section of endoscopy from 1997 till 2003. He founded the Amsterdamse Gastroenterologie Vereniging (Amsterdam Society of Gastroenterology) and the journal Amsterdams Darmkanaal (Amsterdam Intestinal Channel).

As head of the department of MDL Bartelsman considers one of his important tasks managing the clinic, teaching and stimulating translational research which was initiated by his predecessors Tytgat and Van Deventer, focusing in particular on basic and clinic research tracks in diseases of the liver, bile duct and pancreas, inflammatory intestinal diseases, malignant or pre-malignant disorders of the oesophagus and colon, neurogastroenterology and experimental endoscopy.
