Dr G.W.A. van de Meent (b. 1964) has been appointed professor by special appointment (bijzonder hoogleraar) of Procurement Law at the Faculty of Law of the Universiteit van Amsterdam (UvA). He succeeds Prof. Wil Wedekind who was given emeritus status in 2005. The chair has been endowed by the Nederlandse Vereniging voor Aanbestedingsrecht (Dutch association of Procurement Law).

Procurement law is developing rapidly, partly as a result of new rules and legislation. This also implies an increase in procurement law disputes needing conciliation from a civil judge. As professor by special appointment, Van de Meent will focus, among other things, on the effects of the introduction of new (European) procurement legislation and procurement rules in the pre-contractual relations between contracting services and tenderer. In doing so he will also pay attention to the need for improvement of the effectiveness of legal protection of contract parties.

Gert-Wim van de Meent has been working as a lawyer at Loyens & Loeff in Amsterdam since 1995. He and his team are part of Practice Group Competition & Regulatory (Praktijkgroep Mededinging en Overheid). Van de Meent is specialised in European law, particularly (European) procurement law, competition law and state aid. He is also active in areas needing combined advice in these fields, for example care, public transport and public utilities.
