Prof. A.L.G.A. Stille (b. 1944) has been appointed professor by special appointment (bijzonder hoogleraar) of Marital Property Law and Inheritance Law at the Faculty of Law of the Universiteit van Amsterdam (UvA). The chair has been endowed by the Stichting tot Bevordering der Notariële Wetenschap (Society for the Advancement of Notarial Law). It is a new chair.

Guus Stille’s research, in which international aspects and comparative law play an important role, is in the area of marital property law and inheritance law. He is also a lecturer of postacademic courses in these areas. The intention is to accommodate the research at the Amsterdam Institute for Private Law, in particular under the programme of Dutch private law in international and comparative perspective. Stille is vice-president of the Court of Appeal in The Hague. Furthermore, he is director of Stichting Internationaal Juridisch Instituut (Society International Legal Institute). He has been working at the UvA since 2003, first as visiting professor and now as professor by special appointment. Previously he was professor of Notarial Law and Family Law at Utrecht University.

Stille studied law at the Catholic University Nijmegen (now Radboud University Nijmegen), the University of Valencia (Spain) and Leiden University, after which he worked as a junior notary. He later combined this with the position of academic staff member at the Catholic University Nijmegen. Stille obtained his PhD degree at the UvA in 1986. His other positions have included, among other posts, the function of Special Clerk for the Dutch House of Representatives.
