Professor U.H.W. Beuers (1956) has been appointed Professor of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, and in particular cholestatic liver diseases, in the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Amsterdam (AMC-UvA).

As a gastroenterologist and hepatologist, Ulrich Beuers is primarily interested in the treatment of patients with chronic cholestatic (associated with impaired bile secretion), autoimmune, and metabolic liver diseases. His research focuses on the pathophysiology and therapy of cholestatic liver diseases.

Beuers was born and raised in Germany. He studied Medicine in Gent, Berlin, and Freiburg. He obtained his PhD in 1983 from the University of Freiburg with a thesis entitled Die Wirkung des Renin-Angiotensin-Systems auf die Freisetzung von b-Endorphin- und b-Lipotropin-Immunrektivität in der wachen Ratte ("The effect of the renin-angiotensin system on the release of b-endorphin and b-lipotropin immune reactivity in the conscious rat"). Beuers was trained in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology and Hepatology at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität in Munich. He worked there as an instructor and specialist from 1994 to 2001, when he was appointed Professor of Internal Medicine. He left Munich temporarily from 1991 to 1993 to take up a fellowship at the Yale University School of Medicine (New Haven, USA). Beuers serves on the editorial boards of various scholarly journals, including Hepatology, Journal of Hepatology and World Journal of Gastroenterology.
