Dr R.J.P.M. Scholten (1954) has been appointed Professor of Clinical Epidemiology with a focus on evidence-based medicine at the University of Amsterdam's Faculty of Medicine (AMC-UvA).

Rob Scholten develops and refines methods for systematic reviews of results from scientific medical research. He also works on making these results easier to understand for medical professionals, policymakers and patients. He works closely with AMC researchers (particularly in the area of research into the value of diagnostic tests) and with Cochrane groups from around the world.

Scholten teaches in the fields of evidence-based medicine and systematic reviews. He is also involved in teaching the AMC's medical curriculum (CURIUS). Outside of the AMC, he teaches many courses in preparing Cochrane systematic reviews and a course on Evidence-based medicine. Scholten also teaches evidence-based guideline development in close cooperation with the Dutch Institute for Healthcare Improvement (CBO) and various scientific organisations.

Scholten has worked at the AMC's clinical epidemiology department since 2000, initially as a lecturer, and later as a senior lecturer. He is also the director of the Dutch Cochrane Centre in Amsterdam. Since 2004, Scholten has been a member of the Cochrane Collaboration Steering Group, and of a number of its working and advisory groups. He has published in a range of national and international journals, including The Cochrane Library. Scholten is one of the editors of the Dutch-language textbook Introduction to evidence-based medicine (Bohn Stafleu van Loghum, 2008).
