Dr H.J.C. de Vries has been named professor by special appointment of Skin Infections with a special focus on leprosy at the University of Amsterdam's Faculty of Medicine (AMC-UvA).
Dr H.J.C. de Vries (1967) has been named professor by special appointment of Skin Infections with a special focus on leprosy at the University of Amsterdam's Faculty of Medicine (AMC-UvA). The chair was designated on behalf of the Q.M. Gastmann-Wichers Foundation.
Henry de Vries is a dermatologist-venereologist specialising in skin infections, with a focus on sexually transmitted infections (STI) and tropical skin diseases. He will be focusing on clinical, immunological and pathogen-based research in the area of skin infections, including leprosy, occurring in the tropics and subtropics or poor countries elsewhere in the world.
De Vries works at the AMC-UvA's Dermatology department, where he spends one day a week heading the outpatients clinic for infectious skin diseases, with a focus on tropical skin diseases such as leishmaniasis and leprosy. He also teaches trainee dermatologists at the Public Health Service of Amsterdam's (GGD Amsterdam) STI outpatients' clinic. His 1994 doctoral research focused on the healing of skin wounds and was awarded the Leidse Hypocrates Studieprijs 1995 and 1997 Sandoz research prize. As an expert in the area of curative STI care, De Vries is affiliated with the National Institute of Public Health's Centre for Infectious Diseases and is a member of the National Health Council's Committee on the prevention of cervical cancer. He is also a member of the board at the Bethesda Foundation, an organisation working to aid leprosy patients in Surinam.
