Prof. J.S. Kortmann (1974) has been appointed Professor of European Tort Law at the University of Amsterdam’s (UvA) Faculty of Law.

Jeroen Kortmann earned his doctorate at the University of Oxford, where he researched liability for negligence and Negotiorum gestio (voluntary administration of another’s affairs). He has worked as a lawyer at the Stibbe firm in Amsterdam since 2002, from where he was also seconded to Cravath, Swaine & Moore LLP in New York from 2005 until 2006. Kortmann has authored various publications, mainly on the subject of liability law. In 2005 he published a book based on his doctoral research, entitled Altruism in Private Law (Oxford University Press). In its December 2006 books issue, the Nederlands Juristenblad named this publication one of the 21st century’s five best books in the field of legal history and comparative law.

Kortmann has worked at the UvA since July 2007 as a professor by special appointment endowed by the M.H. Bregstein Foundation. He will set forth the work that he conducted in his former position, including teaching the Master’s course in European Tort Law.
