Dr J.J.G.H.M. Bergman has been named Professor of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy at the University of Amsterdam’s (UvA) Faculty of Medicine (AMC-UvA).

Dr J.J.G.H.M. Bergman (1965) has been named Professor of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy at the University of Amsterdam’s (UvA) Faculty of Medicine (AMC-UvA).

Jacques Bergman is a physician specialised in gastroenterology, hepatology and endoscopic intervention at the AMC-UvA’s Gastroenterology and Hepatology Department, where he also heads the Endoscopy Department.

For ten years, Bergman has been leading a research team working on endoscopic detection and treatment of early forms of oesophageal and stomach cancer. The team, comprising ten PhD researchers, six research nurses, five gastroenterologist-hepatologists and two physician’s assistants, conducts multicentre studies in the Netherlands and the rest of Europe, China, Korea and Japan. Bergman additionally serves as secretary of the Gastrointestinal Endoscopy group of the Netherlands Society of Gastroenterology (Nederlandse Vereniging van Gastroenterologie), as chair of the IKA Barrett Advisory Committee and as vice-chair of the Barrett Oesophagus working group of the International Working Group for Classification of Oesophagitis. His work has been published in numerous academic journals, including Lancet, Gastroenterology, Gut, Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, American Journal of Gastroenterology, Endoscopy and Clinics in Gastroenterology and Hepatology.
