Dr T.P.V.M. de Jong (1952) has been appointed Professor by special appointment of Paediatric Urology at the University of Amsterdam’s Faculty of Medicine (AMC-UvA).

Dr T.P.V.M. de Jong (1952) has been appointed Professor by special appointment of Paediatric Urology at the University of Amsterdam’s Faculty of Medicine (AMC-UvA). This chair was established by the Support Emma Children’s Hospital Foundation (Stichting Steun Emma Kinderziekenhuis AMC).

In his research, Tom de Jong focuses on the most effective treatment for congenital conditions and diseases of the urogenital tract as well as treatment strategies for incontinence caused by neurological and non-neurological disorders. He also carries out basic research in kidney development, or nephrogenesis.

De Jong, a paediatric urologist since 1986, has been chief of the largest paediatric urology department in Europe since 2008. This department was created when the paediatric department of the Wilhelmina Children’s Hospital in Utrecht merged with the department created in 2008 at the Emma Children’s Hospital (AMC Amsterdam). In 2006, Dr De Jong became the first person in Europe to receive an internationally accredited teaching qualification* in the field of paedriatic urology.

In addition to his research, De Jong holds various board and advisory positions. He was chair of the Nederlands Kinderurologie Genootschap (Dutch Paediatric Urology Association*) and the Commissie nationale richtlijn incontinentie bij kinderen (Committee for national guidelines on child incontinence *). He is also a fellow of the European Academy of Pediatric Urology and the American Academy of Pediatrics. De Jong has contributed to a large number of books about paediatric urology and together with his colleagues, he has published extensively in the top 25% of academic journals in this field.
