Mireille van Eechoud’s recent research in the field of information law has focused on three key themes: the development of European copyright and database law, the emerging European norms on freedom of information and access to public sector information, and private international law aspects of information law.

As holder of the new chair, Van Eechoud will primarily focus in the coming years on the regulatory framework for public information sources from the perspective of transparency, fundamental communication rights and innovation.

Van Eechoud has held various positions at the Institute for Information Law of the UvA since 1996. From 2009 to 2012, she worked as visiting scholar at the Centre for Intellectual Property and Information Law of the University of Cambridge. She heads the multidisciplinary research project ‘Of Authorship and Originality: Reclaiming Copyright in Support of Creative Collaboration in the Digital Environment (2010-2013). This collaborative project brings together researchers from the UvA, the University of Bergen and the University of Cambridge and forms part of the HERA programme (Humanities in the European Research Area), a partnership between 21 Humanities Research Councils across Europe and the European Science Foundation.

She is also director of studies for the  Information Law Master’s programme and, among other posts, is on the editorial board of AMI, the Dutch journal for copyright, media- and information law. In addition to articles in peer-reviewed journals, policy reports and case comments, she has recently published Conflict of Laws in Intellectual Property: The CLIP Principles and Commentary (Oxford University Press, 2013) with Jürgen Basedow et al. and Harmonizing EU Copyright Law. The Challenges of Better Law Making (Kluwer Law International, 2009) with Bernt Hugenholtz et al.
