Dr Stephan W. Schill, LL.M. (1976) has been appointed professor of International and Economic Law and Governance at the University of Amsterdam's (UvA) Faculty of Law.

Stephan Schill's research focuses on international investment law, investor-state arbitration, European Union law and comparative public law. These fields come together in his European Research Council-funded research project ‘Private-Public Arbitration as Transnational Regulatory Governance: Charting and Codifying the Lex Mercatoria Publica’.

Schill has published widely on international investment law and private-public arbitration, including his monograph The Multilateralization of International Investment Law (Cambridge University Press, 2009) and International Investment Law and Comparative Public Law (Oxford University Press, 2010), which he edited. Since 2014, Prof. Schill has also served as editor-in-chief of The Journal of World Investment and Trade, one of the major journals on international economic law.

Schill also has practical experience in international dispute resolution, including as an expert and arbitrator. Since 2013, he has been a member of the List of Conciliators of the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID), the World Bank Group’s investment dispute settlement arm. He was admitted to the bar as a German Rechtsanwalt and as an attorney-at-law (New York), and has acted as counsel in proceedings before the European Court of Human Rights.

Before joining the University of Amsterdam in 2015, Schill was a senior research fellow at the Max Planck Institute for Comparative Public Law and International Law in Heidelberg, Germany. He has studied at the University of Augsburg, Universite Jean-Moulin Lyon III and New York University School of Law.
