Dr Godsland’s research deploys a broadly cultural studies approach to late-twentieth-and early twenty-first-century Peninsular and Latin American narrative fiction. Her international reputation arises from her work on women’s detective literature, a field in which she developed and demonstrated an innovative methodology for analysis of female-authored crime writing, and from her pioneering promotion via scholarship, conference organisation and publication of academic engagement with Hispanic popular culture. For example, in the 1990s Dr Godsland single-handedly organised an early academic congress devoted to this broader theme, and in 2002 she was the sole host at the world’s first scholarly conference focusing on noir fiction in Spanish. Dr Godsland’s work is extensively cited as a gold standard by others conducting research in these areas. Her leadership in the field is acknowledged in the many international invitations she has received to deliver keynote talks and guest lectures, her media appearances in both English and Spanish, and the large number of requests to collaborate in scholarly networks and contribute to specialist publications. To date, she has published two sole-authored monographs, eight edited volumes and over forty peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters.

Dr Godsland holds a First Class (Honours) Degree, an MA and a PhD from universities within the UK’s prestigious Russell Group. She has lectured at other members of the Russell Group, as well as at Manchester Metropolitan University, the UK’s leading Post-1992 centre of learning. While at Manchester Metropolitan University, Dr Godsland founded and directed the Crime Fictions Research Centre, the first scholarly unit anywhere in the world to promote analysis and study of detective writing, and she was the editor of the Centre’s series of peer-reviewed publications that she also  established.

Dr Godsland has been appointed to visiting research positions or as visiting professor at Monash University and La Trobe University (both in Melbourne), Universitas Castellae (Valladolid, Spain), the Universidade Fernando Pessoa (Porto), the Universidad de León (Spain) and the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile.
