Ronald van Vollenhoven is head of the Clinical Immunology and Rheumatology department at the Academic Medical Center (AMC-UvA) and of the Rheumatology department at the VU University Medical Center, VUmc. He combines his professor’s chair at the UvA with a chair at VU Amsterdam. Van Vollenhoven conducts research into the optimal use of therapies for serious rheumatic diseases.

In his role as professor, Van Vollenhoven will focus on optimising therapeutic strategies for rheumatoid arthritis and systemic lupus erythematosus, and, in addition, on developing both translational and clinical research in Amsterdam in the context of the collaboration within the Amsterdam Rheumatology and Immunology Center (ARC), a partnership between the AMC-UvA, VUmc and Reade.

In addition to being head of Rheumatology at both AMC-UvA and VUmc, Van Vollenhoven chairs the rheumatology research council at Reade and is director of the Amsterdam Rheumatology and Immunology Center (ARC). For the time being, Van Vollenhoven nominally still holds his post as professor and leader of clinical therapy research, inflammatory diseases, at the Karolinska Institute in Sweden. Van Vollenhoven is a member of the Executive Committee of the European League Against Rheumatology (EULAR), chair of the EULAR Standing Committee on Clinical Affairs and Editor-in-Chief of the scientific journal Lupus Science and Medicine.
