Mark van Berge Henegouwen focuses on laparoscopic and gastrointestinal surgery and specialises in the treatment of oesophageal and gastric cancer. He also focuses on improving surgical care, treating post-operative complications and new minimally invasive surgical techniques (keyhole surgery). Van Berge Henegouwen has initiated various projects which examine the quality of care and post-operative quality of life in patients with oesophageal and gastric cancer.

Van Berge Henegouwen's teaching programme ranges from imparting basic knowledge to students, medical interns, nurses and young surgeons and to training young surgeons and specialists in surgical procedures. He also trains oesophageal and gastrointestinal surgeons in the technical skills required for these kinds of surgery, with a particular focus on minimally invasive techniques.

As a professor, he will focus on projects which improve the quality of procedures for patients with oesophageal and gastric cancer. His research also focuses on the effect of multimodal treatment (a combination of surgery and neoadjuvant treatment with radiotherapy and chemotherapy) and quality of life in this patient group.

Van Berge Henegouwen is a gastrointestinal and oncological surgeon at the AMC. He is also a staff member and head of the gastrointestinal surgical programme which is responsible for oesophageal and gastric surgery, the largest centre for upper GI surgery in the Netherlands. Van Berge Henegouwen chairs the scientific committee of the Dutch Upper GI Cancer Audit and is a former chairman of the Dutch Society for Gastrointestinal Surgery.
