Marc Besselink, professor of Surgery

Dr M.G.H. Besselink (1976) has been named professor of Surgery, specialising in pancreatic and hepatobiliary (HPB) surgery, at the University of Amsterdam's Faculty of Medicine (AMC-UvA).

Marc Besselink carries out research into new treatment methods for pancreatic cancer and pancreatitis, minimally invasive HPB surgery, and other strategies to perform HPB surgery as effectively and safely as possible. Much of his research falls under the scope of multicentre Dutch and international study groups.

Alongside his clinical practice as an HPB surgeon, Besselink works on strengthening the alliance between the AMC and the VUmc and works closely with the other alliance partners, various medical specialists and hospitals within oncological networks for HPB disorders. In addition, Besselink teaches Bachelor's and Master's students as well as supervising research physicians and surgeons in training.

About Marc Besselink

Besselink has been working at the AMC, where he is also a principal investigator, since 2012. He is employed within the Gastrointestinal Oncological Center Amsterdam (GIOCA) and represents the AMC at the Dutch Federation of University Medical Centres (NFU)'s oncology committee. Nationally, Besselink was the co-founder of the Dutch Pancreatitis Working Group, the Dutch Pancreatic Cancer Group, the Dutch Pancreatic Cancer Audit and the Dutch Pancreas Biobank (PancreasParel), attracting multiple subsidies for the latter from parties such as the Dutch Cancer Society.

Besselink chairs the Dutch Pancreatic Cancer Group's scientific committee and is a member of the Dutch Hepato Biliary Audit's scientific committee, as well as a member of the advisory councils of the patients' associations for pancreatic carcinoma, pancreatic cysts and pancreatitis. Internationally, he founded the European Consortium for Minimally Invasive Pancreatic Surgery and is a member of the scientific committees of the European-African HPB Association as well as the International HPB Association.

In 2008, Besselink obtained his doctorate cum laude for his research into acute pancreatitis. He additionally took a Master's programme in Evidence-Based Health Care at Oxford University and a fellowship in minimally invasive HPB surgery in Southampton.
