The Amsterdam Centre for Cultural Heritage and Identity (ACHI) and the Department of Media Studies of the Faculty of Humanities are looking for an ICT Specialist Historical Databases en Linked Data as part of Creative Amsterdam: An E-Humanities Perspective (CREATE), supervised by prof. Julia Noordegraaf, and the infrastructure project Golden Agents: Creative Industries and the Making of the Dutch Golden Age, supervised by prof. Charles van den Heuvel.

CREATE is a research program that uses large-scale digital data and techniques to investigate how cultural industries have shaped Amsterdam’s unique position as a Creative City in a European and global context, from the 17th century until the present day. The Golden Agents project, funded by the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO), aims to build a large digital humanities research infrastructure to enable analyses of interactions between producers and consumers of the different forms of art of the Dutch Golden Age.

Job description

You will support researchers by gathering, parsing and analysing research data through digital means, as well as creating and maintaining tools to aid data analysis and dissemination. This involves creating websites, writing scripts to parse and enrich data sets, customizing existing research tools, creating and maintaining databases and maintaining web servers. Data processing and analysis will involve a variety of digital humanities techniques. You will collaborate with CREATE’s senior programmer.

You will also contribute to the development of the Linked Data cloud in the Golden Agents project by converting historical datasets of various origins to RDF. Ideally, you should be able to also understand matching techniques of those datasets to other ones already provided as LOD. You will collaborate with the ontology specialist and the meta-data specialist of the project.

You will be supervised by prof. Julia Noordegraaf, and dr Veruska Zamborlini.

Requirements

We are looking for a candidate with:

  • A MSc or MA degree completed before 31 August 31 2018;
  • experience writing PHP and/or Python, preferably also SQL;
  • demonstrable experience in RDF processing, conversion and linkage;
  • knowledge of semantic web languages meant for reasoning such as OWL, SRWL or SWI-Prolog is a plus;
  • background or demonstrable interest in digital humanities research;
  • ability to function in a multidisciplinary team.

Research experience, or a track record of project based work is a plus.

Appointment

You will be appointed for 38 hours per week (1.0 FTE ) for a maximum period of three years at the Research Department of the Faculty of Humanities. The appointment is initially for a period of 12 months; contingent on satisfactory performance it will be extended by a maximum of 24 months. The intended starting date of the contract is 1 September 2018. The gross monthly salary (on a full-time basis) will range from €2,465 to €2,917 depending on your experience and qualifications. The Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities is applicable.
