The Department of Preventive Dentistry is searching for a talented and enthusiastic researcher. The department focuses on prevention of oral diseases. It consists of researchers experienced in various fields: clinical dentistry, microbiology, ecology and bioinformatics. The outstanding research records and the multidisciplinary expertise of this department provide talented young scientists an inspiring environment to pursue their ambition in dental or biofilm research.
Dental caries remains a global health problem. Oral biofilms represent a crucial factor in caries development. Consequently, the development of new caries-preventive strategies has always focused on removal of oral biofilms. Very recently we discovered that oral biofilms can actually enhance prevention efficacy of oral care products. This new finding underlines that the oral biofilm must not merely be regarded as the cause of caries but can also be employed for caries-prevention. So rather than remove oral biofilms we need to manage them.
In this project we aim to develop effective caries-preventive strategies that maximally benefit from the caries-prevention supportive properties of oral biofilms, using an in-house new in vitro biofilm model. The main activity is to investigate biofilm manipulative strategies to enhance these beneficial aspects of biofilms.
