Picture Frames
in the northern Netherlands between 15th–17th centuries
This PhD research examines picture frames from the late Middle Ages until the end of the Baroque period in the northern Netherlands mainly from the Rijksmuseum collection. The focus is on the original visual appearance of the original framing of paintings from this period.
Case studies are examined by style developments and manufacturing techniques with a sepecial focus on material research of original polychromic and gilded finishes. New scientific data are placed in historical, art historical and stylistic contexts, based on art technological source research, reconstructions and analysis of frames depicted in historical paintings.
