In my PhD-research entitled 'The Many Faces of Duchess Matilda. Matronage, Motherhood and Mediation in the Twelfth Century' (December 2013) I focussed on  the ways Matilda, daughter of Henry II and Eleanor, functioned at the German court of her husband Henry the Lion. As there are relatively many objects that can be related to Matilda and Henry, one of the topics is that of cultural patronage, or matronage, following the suggestion made by Therese Martin in her volume 'Reassessing the Roles of Women as Makers of Medieval Art and Architecture' (2012). At the same time the Gospel Book, Psalter, coins and the German Rolandslied provide an insight in Matilda's status, her duties as wife and as mother and her involvement in Henry's politics. Especially when combined with other sources such as charters, chronicles and inscriptions.

Research interests: gender, patronage, 12th century, nobility, treasuries, metalwork, coins

Over the years I have been actively involved in the undergraduate curriculum: Medieval Amsterdam in Context (with Annika Rulkens), Outsiders in Medieval Art (together with Wendelien van Welie), Representation of Power in the Middle Ages, Survey of Art History I: Ancient & Medieval Art, Medieval Iconography in East and West (together with Sanne Frequin)

I am one of the founders of the Center for Medieval Studies Amsterdam (CMSA) and a board member of CARMEN (the worldwide medieval network).
