Madelon Simons studeerde kunstgeschiedenis aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam en is sinds 1985 docent Kunstgeschiedenis van de Nieuwere Tijd. Zij heeft zich gespecialiseerd in de geschiedenis van het verzamelen en het ontstaan van de eerste musea. Haar proefschrift getiteld "Het Theatrum van de Representatie" gaat over een van de beroemste verzamelaars van de 16de-eeuw aartshertog Ferdinand II van Oostenrijk tijdens zijn verblijf in Praag tussen 1547 en 1567.
In haar huidige onderzoek richt zij zich op Amsterdam en op het westelijk deel van de binnenstad de: 'Nieuwe Zijde'.
