Improving pupils' understanding of historical time

Developing an understanding of historical time is an essential objective of history education, argues Marjan Groot-Reuvekamp. However, the results of examinations held in the final year of primary education in the Netherlands show that too few pupils develop a sufficient grasp of key aspects of historical understanding, such as the ability to place events on a timeline using the appropriate time designations. Groot-Reuvekamp investigates ways of improving pupils' understanding of historical time.
