Marline Lisette Wilders (1978) holds Masters degrees in Arts and Arts Policy (2002), and in Art and Architectural History (2003) from the University of Groningen, The Netherlands. In 2012 she received her PhD title from the same institution. Her dissertation investigates the theatre experience in experience theatres and explores the effects of the architectural characteristics of theatre buildings on the experience of the theatrical event.

In 2013 the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) awarded her a Rubicon fellowship for the project From working space to theatre space; the user perspective. This research project looks into the effects of adaptive reuse of industrial heritage sites for the functioning of both the performing arts and built industrial heritage in society and takes place in Turin (Italy). For the duration of the project (sept 2014-sept 2016) Wilders is affiliated with the Interuniversitary Department of Regional and Urban Studies and Planning of the Politecnico of Turin as a postdocotoral researcher.

Wilders participates in STEP; the Project on European Theatre Systems and is a member of the Theatre Architecture Working Group of the International Federation for Theatre Research.

She lecturered at the Department of Arts, Culture and Media Studies at the University of Groningen from 2003 till 2006 and worked as a consultant in the field of architecture between 2008 and 2011. She joined the University of Amsterdam in 2011 where she was an Assistant Professor in the Cultural Studies programme till 2014.

Theaterbeleving in het belevenistheater.

Theaterbeleving in het belevenistheater [dissertation in Dutch] investigates the theatre experience in experience theatres . "Experience" plays an increasingly important role in the theatre world, as well as in architecture, but also beyond in other domains of daily life, a development corresponding to the emergence of an experience economy and society. A new type of experience theatre was the point of departure to investigate the impact of the architecture of the theatre building. Using an audience survey, this dissertation relates the visitor's theatre experience empirically to the visitor's experience of the theatre building. The study differentiates between theatrical experience created as a result of theatrical communication and theatre experience gained as a result of the theatre visit in full. The impact of the building is discussed in terms of the various values attached to the larger theatre experience. The conclusion is that there does not only exists a detectable link between the theatre building and the theatre experience (the evening as a whole) but also between the theatre building and the theatrical experience. In the experience theatre this seems to be caused by an enhanced process of theatrical framing and a different effect of the two-fold theatre consciousness in the experience buildings (enhanced level of absorption). Experience theatres magnify the theatrical experience: powerful experiences become stronger and weak experiences become even weaker. Furthermore, there is significant evidence suggesting that the social interaction and processing of the performance inside the theatre building increases the appreciation for the show itself and the evening as a whole.

Global Changes - Local Stages

Global Changes - Local Stages investigates the relationships between what happened the last twenty years on the 'world stage' and how theatre life developed on the local level. The subject has been approached from three different angles, each covered by one part of the book: "The Effects of Social Changes on Theatre Fields", "Values in Theatre Politics" and "Localization of Theatrical Values". The group of authors tries to find the links between these three areas. The book profits from the fact that the authors come from two sides of the former 'Wall'. Twenty years after its fall, the transitional processes in countries of the former 'Eastern Bloc' can be compared, not only mutually, but also with the changes in the Western part of Europe.

In part three Wilders discusses how global changes in architecture have affected theatre building in the Netherlands and traces the effects of a particular type of architecture on the theatrical experience, considering the building as an important conditioning factor in the theatrical event. This way she demonstrates that developments at a global level carry effects that find their expression in local situations, before local audiences. In the epilogue of the book, together with van den Hoogen, Wilders draws conclusions and presents an outline for further research, both in the three identified areas and in examining their inter-connections. With its 537 pages Global Changes - Local Stages is the most extensive research of the possible relationships between cultural change, theatre politics and theatre life in smaller European countries.

Since 2005 the International Research Group STEP (Project on European Theatre Systems) investigates the question of how theatre systems condition the functioning of theatre in different countries. The members of the group work at universities in such different cultural regions as Denmark, Estonia, Hungary, Ireland, The Netherlands, Slovenia and Switzerland. With Global Changes - Local Stages STEP exposes a structure of the research field and lays the foundations for following, more detailed studies.
