You are cordially invited to attend the opening Official opening of the Amsterdam Centre for Middle Eastern Studies (ACMES) at the University of Amsterdam. This opening will take place on Thursday, November 14th in the Aula of the University of Amsterdam.
Program
The opening will be performed by rector magnificus Prof. Dr. Dymph van den Boom. Two speakers will enlighten this festive event with scholarship and literature. Joseph Massad is Associate Professor of modern Arab politics and intellectual history at Columbia University, and he will speak about his forthcoming book on Islam and liberalism. Saud al-Sanusi is a Kuwayti novelist and the author of Saq al-Bambu [The Bamboo Stick], which won this year’s prestigious International Prize for Arabic Fiction (a.k.a the ‘Arabic Booker’). Mr. Al-Sanusi will talk about his fascinating novel on the experiences of Philippine migrant workers in the Gulf region. Following the lectures, there will be time for questions and discussion moderated by Hassnae Bouazza.
Time: The opening will begin at 16:00 hours, followed by a reception at 18:00 hours.
