Humanities in the news: Europe after Charlie Hebdo
In cooperation with the Faculty of Humanities (UvA)
Researchers Marieke de Goede, Francesco Ragazzi, Jolle Demmers, Mark Deuze and Julien Jeandesboz discuss civil liberties, Islamophobia and the temptation of vigilantism in Europe in the aftermath of the attack on Charlie Hebdo on January 7th of this year. Moderator: Ruud Peters.
The horrific attacks in Paris have widely been interpreted as an attack on free speech. They have led to calls for intensified data-analysis in the name of security, such as the processing of passenger name record data (PNR) on international travel and the monitoring of internet contents. However, political reactions in the wake of the attacks also reveal the contentious politics of what counts as free speech in contemporary Europe. What can we say about the way these attacks are discussed in the news? How have politicians reacted to the attacks, and how is the new agenda for security being discussed and developed in a European context? Freedom of speech can only be applauded, but what is the impact of Je Suis Charlie on the muslim population in f.e. France? An evening about the recent terrorist attacks in Paris.
