European Elections: the Day After

ACCESS EUROPE in cooperation with SPUI25 and the Jean Monnet Chair in European and Transnational Governance

26May2014 20:00 - 22:00

Debate

A panel consisting of Ewald Engelen (UvA), Sarah de Lange (UvA), Ben Crum (VU) and Katjana Gattermann (ACCESS EUROPE postdoc), moderated by Mark Beunderman (NRC Handelsblad), will analyse and discuss the (preliminary) results of the elections.

22 to 25 May will be important days for the future of the European Union, as European citizens will elect the new European Parliament. The stakes are high, and prognoses indicate great potential for radical changes in the political landscape of the EU.

Never before have the elections for the European Parliament been so salient among citizens, politicians, and scholars. Will the Eurosceptic parties become as successful as the polls make us think, and if so, would that be problematic or instead beneficial? The European Parliament should have become more powerful, for example by nominating the next President of the European Commission. It remains to be seen however if European governments will indeed follow the Parliament, or instead appoint their own candidate. What would this imply for the EU’s democratic legitimacy, and what would be the consequences for the (already fragile) popular support for the EU?

These questions, a review and diagnosis of the campaign and voter turnout, as well as other burning issues (such as the Trade Agreement between the EU and the United States and the European Semester) will be addressed on this ‘Day After’.
