Symposium

The purpose of the seminar is an academic exchange between emerging and established scholars doing research on Gujarat, in various institutes in Europe.

Interested audiences are invited to attend the following lectures and film screenings. (Other parts of the programme are open only to registered conference participants.)

Lectures

Venue: IISG, Cruquiusweg 31, 1019 AT  Amsterdam

  • 9.30-10.15 hrs Opening lecture: ‘The Gujarat model of development and governance: a policy driven by exclusion’, by emeritus professor of Comparative Sociology of Asia  Jan Breman, University of Amsterdam.
  • 16.00-16.45 hrs Closing lecture: The uneven erosion of caste in the politics of Gujarat’, by Christophe Jaffrelot, Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS).  

Ethnographic film on Gujarat

Venue: de Meevaart, Balistraat 48A, 1094 JN, Amsterdam

  • 19:00-20.30 ‘Sundarana. marriage, migration and social change among the Patidars of central Gujarat’ 2014, 50 minutes, by Alice Tilche and Dakxin Bajrange, School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London

After the film screenings, the audience will be invited to have a discussion with the filmmakers. The discussion is led by Erik de Maaker, anthropologist at University Leiden.
