Perceptions of “the state” as an enemy and xenophobia in crisis-ridden Athens
IMES Lecture
26Sept2014
15:30 - 17:00
Pratsinakis conducted research in the Amity (Omónia) square area in Athens in which he focused on one housing block in which immigrants of different descent and natives lived close to each other.
He attempted to find answers to the following questions:
- How do immigrants and natives living in this housing block relate to and think of each other?
- How do they describe their belongingness to their flat, their neighbourhood, Athens and Greece?
- Which social categories do they evoke to describe their experiences of living there and how do they relate to the categories imposed on them by the politicized narratives about ‘living in the dump of Athens’?
