Policing protest in times of austerity
Lecture by Prof. dr. Donatella della Porta (Department of Political and Social Sciences, European University Institute)
Police violence in Taksim Square in Istanbul is yet another example of escalating policing. Donatella Della Porta will present to you the emerging model of protest policing and its causal mechanisms.
NOTE
The lecture by Dontella Della Porta will take place Tuesday June 25 instead of on Wednesday from 13:00 to 14:00.
The new millennium has indeed seen an inversion of a trend towards increasing acceptance of demonstration rights. As representative institutions are losing the trust of their citizens, given increasing problems of legitimacy on the input and the output sides, democratic rights are challenged.
