Screening Politics: Syriana
Brian Burgoon will introduce and discuss this film that tells the story of the transnational politics of US foreign policy and practice in the Middle East. That story turns out to be one where many familiar forces of global politics - terrorism, oil lobbying, Chinese and US foreign policy - are revealed to be interconnected, in many surprising and unforeseen ways.
'Syriana' (Stephen Gaghan, 2005) is already a classic in the genre of political thriller, and its subtitle says part of the reason why: ‘Everything is connected'.
The personal politics of individual avarice and heroism turn out to matter as much as organized politics, and the unintended consequences turn out to matter as much as the intended. The result is an extraordinary and humane critique of modern political life.
Introduction and discussed by Prof. Brian Burgoon (Academic Director AISSR).
