The Rise of the Diasporic Economy: Migration and Contemporary Global Development
Globe Lecture by Dr. Keith Nurse, Chair at the University of the West Indies
The diasporic economy is one of the key growth poles in the contemporary world economy in spite of the general downswing in economic activity in key sectors of the world economy due to the current global economic crisis.
The flows (e.g. remittances, human mobility) associated with the diasporic economy continue to expand and contribute to sending societies such that it has surpassed the traditional sources of external development financing. It is also observed that the diasporic economy is transversal and so has a dynamic impact on the wider economy in terms of the synergistic relationship to other sectors such as tourism, transportation, telecommunications, new media and the creative sector. The presentation explores the key dimensions of these trends and patterns as well as assesses the value and contribution of diasporic investment, entrepreneurship and innovation to global development. The paper will draw on the case of the Caribbean to illustrate the development impact of these flows in the contemporary context.
