The underpinnings of HIV- and AIDS-related education in Mozambique: a qualitative inquiry
- Esther Miedema
The importance of education in general and HIV- and AIDS-related education in particular in efforts to decrease young people’s vulnerability to HIV has been broadly accepted. As demonstrated by continuing debate regarding necessary contents and teaching approaches there is less agreement as to what form HIV- and AIDS-related education should take, however. A critical gap in the literature relates to the general lack of clarity as to the theoretical and philosophical underpinnings of HIV- and AIDS-related education efforts. This thesis aims to elucidate these foundations, arguing that such clarification is essential to efforts to understand and where necessary, challenge assumptions underpinning HIV- and AIDS- related education initiatives as well as possible tensions between programme development in principle and in situ implementation.
