Priority or Equality for Possible People?
Political Theory Seminar Series
Suppose that under conditions of risk, you must make choices that will influence the utility and the identities of the people who will exist—though not the number of people who will exist. How ought you to choose? In his paper Alex Voorhoeve (LSE) develops the most plausible prioritarian and egalitarian answers to this question.
He also argues for the superiority of the egalitarian answer. In so doing, it proposes a new object of distributive concern: the expected utility of an individual conditional on his existence. The paper is co-authored with Marc Fleurbaey (Princeton University).
