Multilevel Democracy
The Treaty of Lisbon (Art. 8A.2) recognizes that the functioning of the European Union is based on two channels of democratic representation: directly through the European Parliament and indirectly through the democratically elected national governments. The European Union can thus be understood as a system of multilevel democracy that concentrates substantial power at the supranational level but whose legitimacy also remains very much premised on the democratic systems of its member states. This workshop brings together prominent scholars from the Pademia-network (www.pademia.eu) with the aim to take stock of the core challenges for parliamentary democracy in a multilevel setting like the European Union. They will deliver short presentations on the main insights that they have gathered in recent years that pertain to the EU’s multilevel democracy. Notably, all presentations will be filmed and made available on the Pademia website
