Professor of Public Policy and Governance Jonathan Zeitlin has been named Distinguished Research Professor by Dean Edward de Haan of the Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences, effective 1 May 2012.
Alongside his own research, Zeitlin will be responsible for developing interdisciplinary education and research programmes exploring the theme of Europe. He will also be involved in setting up the Amsterdam Center for the Study of Contemporary Europe in coordination with the UvA’s partner, VU University Amsterdam.
Zeitlin joined the Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences as professor of Public Policy and Governance in January 2010. His research focuses on new forms of governance in and outside the nation-state and, most recently, on the trend towards a new architecture of ‘experimental’ governance in the European Union.
Last year, the European Commission appointed Zeitlin as Jean Monnet chair, designated for the purpose of promoting research and education on European integration.
Zeitlin is the co-author of Experimentalist Governance in the European Union: Towards a New Architecture (Oxford University Press, 2010).
Exceptional abilities
Distinguished Research Professorships are designated in recognition of professors’ exceptional research and/or teaching abilities. Distinguished Research Professors are expected to play a major role in shaping academic innovation and cooperation between various disciplines at the Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences. Zeitlin is the second Distinguished Research Professor to be appointed by the Faculty, following Patti Valkenburg’s appointment last year.
