'Turkish voters who have more trust in Dutch politics have significantly less trust in Turkish politics'
For the first time Turkish voters who live abroad could vote in their country of residence during the presidential elections 2014 in Turkey. The Turkevi Research Centre and the Institute for Migration and Ethnic Studies (IMES) conducted a survey at the polling station in Rotterdam (Ahoy) to research the voting behaviour of Turkish voters in the Netherlands.
The result of the presidential elections was a victory for the incumbent Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, who was elected outright by a simple majority of the vote in the first round. What can we say about the voting behaviour of Turkish voters in the Netherlands?
Erdogan receives large majority of votes
The majority of Turkish voters in the Netherlands chose Erdogan (76,6%). Ihsanoglu received around 18 percent of the votes and Demirtas received 5 percent of the votes.
More votes for conservative parties
Many of the Turkish voters in the Netherlands voted for conservative parties during the Turkish elections, while many of them voted for progressive parties during the Dutch elections.
Little trust in Dutch politics
A majority of the Turkish voters (66%) has little trust in Dutch politics, and voters aged 30 or more have less trust in Dutch politics compared to younger voters.
Turkish voters who have more trust in Turkish politics have significantly less trust in Dutch politics. Turkish voters who have more trust in Dutch politics have significantly less trust in Turkish politics. Turkish voters who have more interest in Turkish politics also have significantly more interest in Dutch politics.
Voters who voted for Erdogan have considerably more trust in Turkish politics compared to other voters. In addition, individuals who voted for Erdogan have significantly less trust and less interest in Dutch politics.
Highly educated voters have more trust in Dutch politics
Highly educated Turkish individuals voted significantly less for Erdogan and voted less for the AKP. They have less trust in Turkish politics and are more interested, and have more trust in Dutch politics.
Voters for Erdogan show more support for PvdA
Voters for Erdogan and Ihsanoglu show most support for the PvdA, while voters for Demirtas favour the SP.
Turkish individuals who voted for the PvdA or one of the local Islamic parties have significantly less trust and less interest in Dutch politics compared to other voters.
Turkish individuals, who voted for D66 during the Dutch elections, are considerably more interested in Dutch politics.
Turkish voters with Dutch citizenship are more interested in Dutch politics
Voters who are born in Turkey have less trust in Turkish politics compared to voters who are born in the Netherlands.
Turkish voters without the Dutch citizenship are less interested in Dutch politics compared to voters who have Dutch citizenship.
