10 September 2013

The University of Amsterdam has been placed in the top 50 for the discipline of Social Sciences by the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU). This ranking of the world’s 500 best universities is published annually by Shanghai Jiao Tong University and is therefore known as the Shanghai ranking.

In previous years Social Sciences at the UvA had been placed in the 51-75 range (with no individual rankings allocated), but this year the UvA placed 50th, making it the best university in the Netherlands for this discipline.
The ARWU ranking is drawn up based on the numbers of Nobel prizes, Fields Medals held by staff members and alumni, numbers of citations, and numbers of articles published in the scientific journals Nature and Science.
