Persoonlijke gegevens

In 1985 studeerde ik af en in 1992 promoveerde ik aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam. Sindsdien ben ik als universitair docent verbonden aan de Afdeling Politicologie van de UvA. Mijn specialisaties liggen zowel op het terrein van de politieke theorie als op het terrein van empirisch vergelijkend onderzoek. De geschiedenis van de democratie en democratietheorie vormen een belangrijk onderzoeksterrein. Ik ben eveneens gespecialiseerd in beleidsonderzoek op het terrein van en betrokken bij verschillende praktische initiatieven tot vernieuwing van de democratie, onder meer in opdracht van WRR, VROM en Instituut voor Publiek& Politiek. Daarnaast heb ik als visiting fellow aan de ANU/Canberra onderzoek gedaan naar deliberatieve designs in Australië.

Mijn huidige onderzoek richt zich op nationalisme en populisme en op vergelijkend onderzoek naar radicaal rechtse populistische partijen in West-Europa.
Voor mijn recente onderzoek naar de impact van radicaal rechtse partijen op het immigratiebeleid ontving  ik in 2013  The Gordon Smith and Vincent Wright Memorial Prizes. ( Zie  West European Politics, 36:3, (v)-(v), DOI: 10.1080/01402382.2013.773698)
