Dr. Anja van Heelsum is assistant professor at the Department of Political Science. Her main area of interest lies in a multidisciplinary approach to Migration and Ethnic Studies (MES) and Conflict Resolution & Governance (CRG), where insights from psychology, political science, sociology and anthropology meet. Topics of her research include: ethnic identity, political participation of immigrants, migrant organisations, city policies on immigrants and Islam. Regional interest: Mediterranean area (Spain, Greece, Turkey, Morocco) and Africa (Somalia, Sudan, Ethiopia, Eritrea).

In 2012 Anja was a visiting researcher at the Dutch Institute in Morocco - NIMAR - in Rabat. She's also regularly in Ethiopia (University of Mek'ele and Addis Abeba).
