PhD Project: Societal unease

Eefje Steenvoorden is a PhD Candidate at the Political Science Department of the University of Amsterdam (UvA) and the Netherlands Institute for Social Research/ Sociaal en Cultureel Planbureau (SCP). Her dissertation centers on the negative attitudes in western countries towards society and the direction it is heading. This phenomenon, referred  to as 'malaise' by the French, 'Unbehagen' by the Germans, 'maatschappelijk onbehagen' by the Dutch and the Flemish, is called societal unease.

The aim of the dissertation is to conceptualize and operationalize societal unease from the broad range of literature addressing discontent among western citizens. Furthermore, quantitative analyses will be used to explore both within the Netherlands and cross nationally which groups of citizens and which peoples particularly experience societal unease. Also the consequences of societal unease in terms of civic and political behavior will be investigated.

Biography

After finishing a Propedeuse (first year degree) in Psychology and a Bachelor in Social Cultural Sciences, she graduated in Sociology of Globalization and Diversity in 2008 ( cum laude ) at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. During her masters she was an intern at the SCP, where she wrote two co-authored chapters in reports on the female labor force participation. In her master thesis she investigated cross nationally the effect of educational level on the labour force participation of women. This thesis is rewarded with the NIDI scriptieprijs in 2009 for the best master thesis in demographic studies of the previous two years.             

From 2008 to 2011 Eefje was employed a researcher at the SCP and investigated citizens' attitudes on society and politics in the research called Continu Onderzoek Burgerperspectieven/ Citizens' Outlook Barometer (COB).
