Biographical sketch

After graduating in Social Psychology at the University of Amsterdam in 2006, I followed an extra Master Holocaust and Genocide studies at the History department of the UvA. This strengthened my ideas on the importance of interdisciplinary research dealing with complex and multifaceted processes of human behaviour. From 2008 onwards I worked as a teaching assistant, teaching methodology, statistics, SPSS and academic writing courses to first and second year Psychology students at the UvA and the Free University of Amsterdam. In 2010 I started my Phd project under supervision of Prof. dr. Agneta Fischer, Prof. dr. Bertjan Doosje and Dr. Allard Feddes.

Research interests

My Phd project is focused on the antecedents and consequences of interpersonal and group-based feelings of humiliation. One can feel personally humiliated, but it is also possible to experience feelings of humiliation as a consequence of perceived humiliation of the ingroup by (members of) an outgroup. It is hypothesized that experiences of humiliation, especially those on the group-level, are involved in violent radicalisation and, sometimes, terrorism.

This research topic is connected to another part of my project dealing with  radicalisation processes related to violent behaviour. This concerns the evaluation of an intervention study on radicalisation in Amsterdam, which is part of the EU sponsored project SAFIRE (Scientific Approach to Finding Indicators & Responses to Radicalisation, see: http://www.safire-project.eu/).
