International Symposium 'Acting in Contemporary Art Conservation' and SBMK Day Plastics
The conservation and presentation of contemporary art makes high demands of museums and art galeries. The degree programme Conservation and Restoration at UvA, in collaboration with the Foundation for the Conservation of Contemporary Art (SBMK) and the Cultural Heritage Agency of the Netherlands (RCE), is organising the two-day workshop 'Acting in Contemporary Art Conservation' for curators, conservator/restorers and art historians.
The Symposium will take place on Thursday 15 November at the RCE in Amersfoort, and on Friday 16 November at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. The programme consists of topics that at the forefront of contemporary art conservation and restoration, such as decision-making processes, collaboration with artists and new documentation methods like oral history.
SMBK Day on Plastics
On Wednesday 14 November, the day before the symposium, the Centraal Museum in Utrecht will host an English-spoken SBMK Day, focusing especially on plastics. This event offers a stage for recently conducted research in the area of plastics and the Project Plastics, a collaboration between the SBMK and the RCE programme Heritage in Modern Times.
Plastics increasingly pose a problem for collections in Dutch museums; in modern and contemporary art collections, but also in design collections. Plastics are generally not made to last for an eternity and long-term use; additionally, such materials are often used improperly by artists. As a result, objects show signs of degradation and mechanical damage.
