Shanghai Ranking: UvA’s Social Sciences once again best in the Netherlands

UvA advances further in worldwide ranking

The Social Sciences at the University of Amsterdam have once again risen in the field ranking conducted by the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), also known as the Shanghai Ranking, advancing from 39th to 37th place worldwide.

This means the UvA's Social Sciences have again been judged the best of Dutch universities and of universities in non-Anglo Saxon countries. As in previous years, the UvA's overall score placed it in the 101 - 150 class of ARWU's top 500 worldwide.

A global success

The Social Sciences at the UvA are scoring high marks in other eminent rankings as well. They secured 36th place in the Social Sciences subject ranking of the Times Higher Education World University Rankings. Social Sciences and Management at the UvA also rated 42nd place on the QS Ranking by Faculty. And finally, the UvA's Social Sciences and Humanities come in at the 54th spot in the Leiden Ranking, the best result of any Dutch university in this discipline.

This list of the world’s 500 best universities is published annually by Shanghai Jiao Tong University and is therefore known as the Shanghai ranking. The ARWU ranking is drawn up based on the numbers of Nobel prizes, Fields Medals held by staff members and alumni, numbers of citations, and numbers of articles published in the scientific journals Nature and Science.
