Urban Studies (Research MSc)

The Research Master Urban Studies is organised by the Graduate School of Social Sciences of the Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences at the University of Amsterdam.

The academic staff of this programme is actively involved in research at UvA's Amsterdam Institute of Social Science Research (AISSR) and the Centre for Urban Studies.

Hebe Verrest

The adjunct director of the Research Master Urban Studies is Hebe Verrest.

Hebe Verrest is Assistant Professor in the Department of Geography, Planning and International Development Studies, University of Amsterdam. Her main research interest include

  • urban livelihoods and well-being in Caribbean cities; 
  • informality, governance and Caribbean urban development; 
  • frictions in the urban fringes in East-Africa; 
  • urban planning and development. 

Hebe manages an EU-funded programme on urban land management and sustainable urban planning in the Caribbean in which Caribbean Universities, planning institutions and CARICOM are involved.

The Fieldwork and Exchange coordinator of the Research Master Urban Studies is Marco Bontje.

Marco Bontje is assistant professor in the Department of Geography, Planning and International Development Studies, University of Amsterdam. His specialisation is urban geography. His research interests include the spatial, social, economic and institutional conditions for successful creative knowledge cities in Europe; national and regional spatial planning strategies; shrinking cities; gentrification; and sustainable urban and regional development.

Willem Salet is professor of urban and regional planning in the Department of Geography, Planning and International Development Studies at the University of Amsterdam. He leads the AISSR programme group Planning, Institutions and Transforming Spaces and from 2008-2010, he was the president of the Association of European Schools of Planning (AESOP).

Jan Rath

Prof. Jan Rath received his MA Degree in cultural anthropology and urban studies and his PhD from Utrecht University. He is now Professor of Urban and Migration Sociology in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at the University of Amsterdam. Until 2011 he was Director of the Institute for Migration and Ethnic Studies (IMES), now part of the Amsterdam Institute for Social Science Research. He is, moreover, involved in the European Research Network IMISCOE and the European Chair of International Metropolis.

Robert Kloosterman

Robert Kloosterman is Professor of Economic Geography and Planning in the Department of Geography, Planning and International Development Studies at the University of Amsterdam. He leads the AISSR programme group Geographies of Globalization. He was the Director of the Amsterdam Institute of Metropolitan and International Development Studies (AMIDSt), Universiteit van Amsterdam from 2003 to 2008. He is also Honorary Professor at the Bartlett School of Planning, University College London.

Sako Musterd

Prof. Sako Musterd is professor in Social Geography in the Department of Geography, Planning and International Development Studies at the University of Amsterdam. He leads the AISSR programme group Urban Geographies. From 2009-2011, he was chairing the Research Priority Programme Urban Studies. He is also permanent visiting professor in the Department of Urban Studies, University of Glasgow.
